This means that while African Americans are more likely to be targeted, the risk is even greater for African American males.

In Racism and Police Brutality in America, Chaney & Robertson find that, “In their research, the authors suggest that since Black people in general, and Black males in particular, are caricatured as aggressive and criminal, police are more likely to view Black men as a threat which justifies the disproportionate use of deadly force” (Chaney & Robertson). The two sources support each other, and work together to prove this point. Lower-class, male citizens are more likely to be victims of police brutality.

Other factors that go into the likelihood of police brutality are gender and class. These racist tendencies are what still make police brutality appear today all over the news and social media. Both of these sources are in agreement that minority groups, specifically African Americans, are more likely to be victims of police brutality because of deeply-rooted racist tendencies in the minds of police officers.

This means that police are more likely to be violent towards African Americans because of their tendency to see them as likely criminals deserving of punishment. Chaney and Robertson have a similar argument, “More specifically, the authors posit that most Whites believe that Blacks are disproportionately inclined to engage in criminal behavior and are the deserving of harsh treatment by the criminal justice system ” (Chaney & Robertson). This means that for whatever reason, police officers see minority groups as people who are more likely to be doing something they’re not supposed to, or be perceived as more dangerous than Both sources seem to agree on this point, as Reiss says, “Members of minority groups and those seen as non-conformists, for whatever reason, are the most likely targets of status degradation” (Reiss). Police officers are more likely to treat minority groups with suspicion, and that makes them more likely to be the victims of harassment or unnecessary force. Lower-class, male minority citizens are most likely to be victims of police brutality or harassment because of the suspicion between them and the officers. Another article, by Cassandra Chaney and Ray Robertson, called Racism and Police Brutality in America, looks at police brutality specifically focused on Black males, and finds that there is a high rate of documented police brutality by utilizing the National Police Misconduct Statistics and Reporting Project database for statistics, which doesn’t even include undocumented incidents. Reiss Jr, called Police Brutality - Answers to Key Questions, looks for answers to questions about police brutality, and finds that “police brutality is far from rare and the most likely victim is a lower-class man of either race” (Reiss). People all around have opinions about it, like whether it is a problem or not, and who it affects. Police brutality is defined as “the use of excessive physical force or verbal assault and psychological intimidation” (Chaney & Robertson). Police brutality is a controversial subject that has received a lot of attention recently.
